Why I started Solva

Portrait of Thomas Gnahm

I'm a designer, and I've spent most of my life on things you can see: posters, books, typefaces, and later technology you wear on your body. But what has really carried me through everyday life is something you can't see.

Many years ago I started doing yoga, more out of curiosity than conviction. I stayed because I noticed what it did for me. I love sport, I need to move, but I need retreat just as much: moments when nothing is expected of me, when I simply breathe and come back to myself.

What still fascinates me today is how closely mind and body belong together. When I find calm inside, I feel it in my shoulders, in my breath, in my sleep. And the other way round: a few minutes of mindful movement or breathing change how I think and how I look at the day. To me, it all belongs together, as one whole.

I'm lucky to have friends who work with yoga, meditation and relaxation for a living. They taught me that these techniques aren't a luxury for retreats. You can use them in everyday life, between two meetings, on the train, on the sofa in the evening, if only you have them at hand.

That's exactly where it often falls short. Most of us know a pause would do us good. But in the moment we need it, we lack the guidance, the calm or simply the idea of where to start. And ready-made recordings rarely fit what you're feeling right now.

A few minutes that belong only to you.

That's why I started Solva. You say how you're doing right now, and Solva turns it into a guided audio session that fits exactly this moment: to wind down, to recharge, to take a breath.

I want to pass on something that has given me a lot. Solva doesn't replace therapy or a doctor, and it isn't meant to. It's an invitation to give yourself a small pause more often and to feel what it does for you.
